Tidal stream power gets Wales test site
A test site for a tidal energy project has been identified off the coast of West Wales.
Cardiff-based Tidal Energy has selected a site in Ramsey Sound to test its DeltaStream unit, which it claims does not require a positive anchoring system.
It will deploy a unit, which consists of three turbines mounted on a triangular frame and can supply energy to about 1,000 homes, for 12 months during 2010.
Chris Williams, development director at Tidal Energy, told Wales Online: "Establishing a test site is a major breakthrough and puts us on the path to helping Wales utilise its natural assets and join the race to develop marine renewables.
"The tidal stream at Ramsey Sound is particularly strong and together with its water depth and local distribution network, is perfectly suited to testing Delta- Stream."
He added that the DeltaStream technology was relatively safe on marine life as its turbines move relatively slowly.
Tidal Energy has the financial support of Eco2, a company with experience in developing renewable resources and Carbon Connections UK, a scheme set up at the University of East Anglia to support universities and industries in carbon-reduction projects.
